The Modern Woman
The modern woman fears
Wearing short shorts
Having a baby she can't abort.
Wearing too much lipstick,
Becoming a statistic.
Walking near a group of men
Being asked if she could “bring a friend.”
Putting a cup down at a bar,
Being whistled at by passing cars.
Showing her shoulders and breaking dress code,
Or being told she's a prude because there isn't a leg shown.
Being told she isn't gay but needs to “find the right man”.
Expressing her ideas because no one else will understand.
Being called in after hours to “talk” to her boss
And scared to deny him because her job will be lost.
Being objectified to the point where she's a body and no longer a being.
Or getting harassed beyond words
But rape culture shames her into not speaking.
Or not being able to feed her child in public because of the over sexualization of her chest.
Or being considered less of a woman because cancer forced her to cut off her breasts.
Or trying to take a stand and not being taken serious
Because “she's probably just worked up and on her period”.
Or showing her religion by wearing a headress
And getting it snatched and being called a terrorist.
Or not ‘snapping back’
After pushing another human out of her body.
Or being told she shouldn't love herself because she's deemed shaped oddly.
Or not fitting ideals
And being driven to get silicon stuffed in her and being told
“she isn't real”.
Showing her real self and being called boring
Getting weaves because she hates her culture and wants to look foreign.
Or wearing her hair natural because
Then she is unprofessional and isn’t trying to look presentable.
Or her love for women being fetishized
Or gaining a little weight and being told she needs to exercise.
Or getting an eating disorder and it not being valid
And her being told that she just wants attention and is being dramatic.
